ABC Classic

ABC Classic is Australia’s nationwide, publicly funded fine music radio network. Owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), it launched on 24 January 1976 as ABC FM. The radio station broadcasts nationwide on FM, DAB+ digital radio and online from its main studio in Sydney, as well as from its historic studio in Adelaide.

The schedule mixes accessible daytime programming with specialist classical music. Presenters keep the tone approachable. Russell Torrance handles Mornings, combining major works with screen music trivia. Vanessa Hughes hosts Drive, while Megan Burslem covers the Classic Breakfast slot.

The playlist blends core classical composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky with contemporary film scores by John Williams or Joe Hisaishi. Broadcasts regularly highlight Australian talent, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Slava Grigoryan.

Unlike community stations such as Fine Music 102.5 or 3MBS, ABC Classic runs zero commercial ad spots and offers nationwide coverage. This makes it a primary choice for uninterrupted classical music, backed by high production standards and original album releases. However, daytime tracks often lean toward popular, lightweight pieces rather than complex or avant-garde compositions.

Beyond daily broadcasts, the station highlights the ABC Young Performers Awards to support emerging Australian musicians and produces award-winning classical albums.
